Thorium-Fueled Automobile Engine Needs Refueling Once a Century

Thorium Concept Car
Thorium Concept Car
There are now over one billion cars traveling roads around the world directly and indirectly costing trillions of dollars in material resources, time and noxious emissions. Imagine all these cars running cleanly for 100 years on just 8 grams of fuel each.
Laser Power Systems (LPS) from Connecticut, USA, is developing a new method of automotive propulsion with one of the most dense materials known in nature: thorium. Because thorium is so dense it has the potential to produce tremendous amounts of heat. The company has been experimenting with small bits of thorium, creating a laser that heats water, produces steam and powers a mini turbine.
Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept
Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept
Current models of the engine weigh 500 pounds, easily fitting into the engine area of a conventionally-designed vehicle. According to CEO Charles Stevens, just one gram of the substance yields more energy than 7,396 gallons (28,000 L) of gasoline and 8 grams would power the typical car for a century.
The idea of using thorium is not new. In 2009, Loren Kulesus designed the Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept Car. LPS is developing the technology so it can be mass-produced.

Wider Implications of Thorium

According to Robert Hargraves, “low or non-CO2 emitting energy sources must be cheaper than coal or will ultimately fail to displace fossil fuels.” The United States uses 20% of the world’s energy today and, according to Hargraves, if it cut its CO2 emissions to zero, 80% produced by other countries would still be a problem. With CO2 emissions climbing seemingly beyond all bounds, pessimism is rampant and bold ideas are needed.
Thorium may also be the answer to the world’s nuclear energy conundrum and Wikipedia provides some of its advantages:
  • Weapons-grade fissionable material (233U) is harder to retrieve safely and clandestinely from a thorium reactor; this means, for example, Iran could be asked to develop only a thorium based reactor, virtually eliminating the issue of nuclear weapon development.
  • Thorium produces 10 to 10,000 times less long-lived radioactive waste;
  • Thorium mining produces a single pure isotope, whereas the mixture of natural uranium isotopes must be enriched to function in most common reactor designs. The same cycle could also use the fissionable U-238 component of the natural uranium, and also contained in the depleted reactor fuel;
  • Thorium cannot sustain a nuclear chain reaction without priming,[29] so fission stops by default in an accelerator driven reactor.
Hargraves sees factories and other industrial concerns using thorium as well. Stay tuned as we track this idea and its development.

The Huracan gets a smooth rear

Lamborghini Huracan

 Lamborghini Huracan
The Lamborghini Gallardo has been the Italian automaker’s most successful car to date with a total production of 14,002 units in its 10-year life span. When it announced that the Gallardo was being retired, many said that the successor had big shoes to fill and would probably have to just as crazy as the Gallardo was when it was launched. It seems that after all the hype Lamborghini has not disappointed when it launched the Huracan LP 610-4 in April of this year. It is now bringing the car to India and will launch it on September 22.
Exterior
The Huracan has the signature low down Lambo design and has a very similar overall shape as compared to the larger Aventador coupe. It gets a low sweeping bonnet, with angular-shaped projector headlights which look like slits in what is otherwise a very smooth façade. The air intakes extend from the front of the car and are superimposed by the number plate holder. On the side, the roofline stretches downwards in both directions accentuating the image of the car sitting really low off the ground. There are a large amount of aerodynamic lines and thanks to the flared wheel arches as well as the large 18-inch wheels, the Huracan looks as planted as possible.
 Lamborghini Huracan
The Huracan gets a smooth rear end which looks like an evolution of the Gallardo but thanks to the shape of the tail lamps looks more modern. There are four massive oval exhausts and twig shaped LED tail lamps and a massive lip spoiler which has been placed above a mesh cooling duct for the mid-mounted engine.
 Lamborghini Huracan
Interior
The Huracan gets an interior very similar to that of the much larger Aventador but the layout looks a little more organised thanks to the wider size of the instrument cluster. There is a large array of toggle switches on both sides of the steering wheel while the paddles behind the wheel are massive giving the impression of an extremely busy area. If we observe the design, then we can see that the car is all about being driver oriented.
 Lamborghini Huracan
The seats are racing buckets with contrast-coloured stitching and are mostly Alcantara while the rest of the dashboard is covered in leather. It gets all the luxury options including a touch screen infotainment system, climate control, electrically adjustable OVRMs, multiple airbags and to add to the drama, a launch control button with a flip up cover.
Engine and gearbox
The Huracan is powered by a 5.2-litre V10 that produces 610bhp, 560Nm of torque and sends power to all four-wheels via a four-wheel-drive system and seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. The car can sprint to 100 kmph from standstill in 3.2 seconds and the 0 to 200kmph run can be done in 9.9 seconds with a claimed top-speed of 325kmph. The Huracan features stop-start technology as standard and has CO2 emissions as low as 290 g/km.
 Lamborghini Huracan
Price and competition
We expect that the Huracan will priced in the range of Rs 1.8 crore to Rs 2.5 crore and will compete with the Audi R8, BMW M6 Gran Coupe and the Porsche 911.

First of the new vehicles from the Pune-based automake

Tata Zest

Tata Zest Review

The Tata Zest compact sedan is the first of the new vehicles from the Pune-based automaker. It was first shown just ahead of the Auto Expo, and was launched in the middle of 2014 in five diesel and four petrol variants.
It features a very similar design to that of the hatchback but includes a noticeable but quite decent looking boot. It makes use of the same engine, underpinnings, interior design as well as feature list from the hatchback.
The variant nomenclature is new to this family of vehicles and runs across both petrol and diesel engine options- XE, XM, XMS, XT and XMA , the last of which is specific to the diesel range and has been mated to the five-speed AMT.
Exterior
The Tata Zest follows the same principle as that of the Bolt hatchback in terms of design and overall appearance. The side profile remains the same up to the C-Pillar but thanks to the boot has a different appearance. At the back, the lights have a similar design to that of the hatchback with a stubby boot lid. All variants are being offered with alloy wheels, body coloured bumpers and chrome inserts on the outside, the final being added for premium appeal.
Above the base XE variant, projector head lamps, chrome weather strips on windows and OVRMs with LED indicators are standard. The top-spec XT variant also gets chrome garnish on the fog lamps, LED daytime running lights and LED guide rings on the head lamps.
Interior
The interiors are exactly the same as the hatchback including the overall layout, features and upholstery. The list includes Harman touch screen music system, gauges behind the steering wheel and two-tone upholstery across all variants.
The feature list is exhaustive with the top-spec XT (petrol and diesel) getting a touch screen infotainment system developed by Harman for Tata, climate control, power windows, electrically adjustable OVRMs, rear parking sensors, dual-tone interiors, door-coordinated cabin lights and day night adjustable rear-view mirror.
Engine and gearbox
In terms of engines, Tata will offer this compact sedan with the 1.2-litre Revotron engine which is petrol powered and produces 84bhp/140Nm. The diesel engine on the other hand is the 1.3-litre Quadrajet diesel. Transmission options include the five-speed manual as well as an AMT which is a first for Tata especially in this segment.
Competition
The Tata Zest competes with other sub-four metre sedans like the Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire and the Hyundai Xcent.

The Skoda Octavia is back in India in its third iteration

Skoda Octavia

Skoda Octavia
The Skoda Octavia is back in India in its third iteration. The D segment sedan holds a lot of promise with a complete overhaul to both the exteriors and interiors based on the Vision D concept. The new car from Czech carmaker has a seeming resemblance to the 2013 European Skoda Rapid, but is premium of the two and also a brand in itself.
Skoda Octavia Exterior
Skoda has moved towards softer lines and more rounded edges to give the new Octavia a classier, premium and more modern feel. It gets LED DRLs and front grille with vertical stats that make the front look aggressive. The all-new Octavia is also substantially longer and wider compared to the Laura, which also means that it has more cabin space for the passengers. The tailgate has the two diagonal lines that we first saw on the Rapid along with C-shaped tail lamps and reversing lamps and turn-blinkers in the middle.
Skoda Octavia Headlamps
The interiors have significantly improved with faux wood trim and beige theme, but the overall design is standard and like any other VW group car. The top-end variant gets touchscreen music system, front and rear parking sensors, six airbags, ABS-EBD, ESP, traction control, steering mounted audio controls, power seat for the driver with memory function, rear AC vents and rear sunblind. The rear row gets better leg room; however, like before the under thigh support is not optimum. There are ample cubby holes that double-up as bottle holders at the front, while the space in the rear armrest can be adjusted to fit any size of bottle or even cup. We are glad that Skoda has retained the feature that lets you access boot space from inside the car, hopefully few more cars in India get this feature.
Skoda Octavia Side View
The Skoda Octavia is available in three trims– Active Ambition and Elegance. The 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel TDI producing 141bhp and 320Nm of torque is available across all trim levels. The Elegance version with an oil burner gets a six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox as a standard fitment, while it is an optional extra for the Ambition trim. The Active and Ambition petrol are powered by 1.4-litre TSI unit that has a power rating of 138bhp and 250Nm coupled with six-speed manual transmission. The Elegance petrol on the other hand gets a 1.8-litre TSI that is good to churn out 177bhp and 250Nm through seven-speed DSG transmission.
Skoda Octavia Interior Seats
The Elegance petrol is also the only variant to get the independent rear suspension, which drastically improve the ride and handling of the car. The rest of the lineup get two torsion beams at the rear that are actually sufficient in most situations. The decision to use independent suspension on the Elegance petrol hints that Skoda plans to bring the vRS Octavia to India soon, as it uses the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder mill.
Skoda Octavia interior Photo
Skoda has ditched the hydraulic steering from its predecessor for a new electrically assisted one – it is light and precise but the feedback is not that great. The ride is tuned for comfort, so there is a certain amount of body-roll at high speeds but the Octavia takes care of undulations and small potholes with ease. The ground clearance of the luxury sedan is also decent to manage mountainous speed-breakers and jumbo-sized potholes, but entry has to be slow to avoid the bumper hitting the ground.
Skoda Octavia Front view
The handling of the Octavia is positive; you can push this car through the corners really hard. It grips through the corners at high speed and there is minimal under steer, despite this being a heavy front-wheel-drive car. The only issue is that the body-roll will make rest of the occupants a little uncomfortable. Overall, the Skoda Octavia is a competent product which offers European quality and technology, but with a slightly premium price tag – especially for the top-end variants.
Skoda Octavia
Skoda has strategically launched the car before the start of the festive season with a competitive starting price. It competes with the Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla Altis, Chevrolet Cruze, Renault Fluence, Volkswagen Jetta and others in the D-Segment. Also the new car will have to face competition from SUVs and MUVs like the XUV500 and Toyota Innova that are slotted in same segment.

Nissan Terrano is the latest entrant to the entry-level utility segment

Nissan Terrano

Nissan Terrano
Nissan Terrano is the latest entrant to the entry-level utility segment. The new model is based on its French sibling, the Renault Duster, but looks a lot different with Nissan’s SUV design philosophy. The Terrano enters one of the fastest growing segments with not only decent looks and features list, but also with one of the most dependable platforms.
Nissan has concentrated mainly on the looks of the Terrano to distinguish it from the Renault product. Almost every body-panel is different from the hood, to the doors and the tailgate. Unlike the Micra/Pulse this one looks a lot different and one from Nissan’s own SUV range. The grille consists of a lot of chrome with trapezoid chrome strips on either side of a bold logo and dual-barrel square headlamps with blacked-out insides flank the grille. The creases on the bonnet start from the front grille, which also has a silver bash-plate on the other side adding to the overall masculine look. The overall design of the Terrano is similar to that of the new X-Trail and Pathfinder.
Nissan Terrano Front View
The side profile also has bold lines but unlike the Duster’s these don’t curve but are angular. The flared wheel-arches make the Terrano look aggressive, distinguishing it from most of Nissan’s models in India. The doors have two horizontal creases in them that help with the butch look, but it isn’t enough to alleviate the organic lines of the rest of the car. The rear end bears no similarity to any of the Nissan SUVs and it is evident that Nissan has developed a new tail lamp cluster without fiddling too much with the Duster lamps. It gets a chrome garnish to add a premium feel, but the overall appearance is rugged with roof rails and silver skid plates.
Nissan Terrano Rear view
The top-end version of the Terrano gets 10-spoke machine-finished petal shaped alloy-wheels, they feel premium but somehow look a little out-of-place on the muscular car. They will probably suit the Duster which is softer of the two cars.
Nissan Terrano Dashboard
The interiors of the Terrano also look familiar to that of the Duster, but there are a few subtle yet important changes when compared to its predecessor . Nissan has worked a bit on the interior quality and the cabin now feels premium. The music system is also different and this one is more ergonomic and user friendly. However the ORVM adjustment switch is still not easy to use; positioned under the handbrake lever. The rest of the equipment list is pretty much the same including the one-step driver height adjust and orange backlight for the instrument cluster. It also gets a rear AC vent that adds to the comfort of passengers, but it is a tad bit noisy increasing the NVH level. The base XE diesel variant gets all black interiors, while the rest of the line-up gets a beige-black combination that makes the cabin look roomier.
Nissan Terrano Boot Space
The Nissan Terrano is available in both petrol and diesel guise. The diesel version is powered by the same 1.5-litre dCi engine that powers the Duster and will be available in two different grades – the 85bhp base variant and 110bhp for the top spec version. Similarly, the petrol XL variant gets the 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit churning out 102bhp and 145Nm of torque. Nissan has not fiddled around with the engine tuning or the suspension setup and this means the riding and handling of the Terrano is exceptionally good.
Nissan Terrano Headlamps
Nissan is offering only one variant (the XL) of the Terrano petrol – it has ABS-EBD-Brake Assist, driver side airbag, music system and front fog lamps. On the other hand the diesel Terrano is available in six variants – the base XE variant has a driver side airbag and power windows. The diesel XL variants have exactly the same features as that of the petrol counterpart and are available in both 85PS and 110PS tune. The XL Plus diesel gets an extra airbag at the front and alloy wheels as well. The top-end XV variants are available only with 110PS output and six-speed manual transmission. The additional features include rear AC vents, rear parking sensors and leather wraps for steering and the gear-knob. The premium version gets leather seats and wood finish inserts on the doors.
Nissan Terrano Engine Bay
The Franco-Japanese consortium has an agreement that the donor car will be positioned below the new model and hence the prices of the Terrano are higher as compared to the Duster. India being a price sensitive market, the difference between the Terrano and its French counterpart is not more than Rs 40,000 even for the top spec variant.
Nissan Terrano Wheels Tyres
The few things that differentiate the Terrano from the Duster include looks, ergonomics and interior quality – all of which rank high on any buyer’s priority list. This compact crossover competes with the Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV500, Tata Safari Storme, Force One and the Mahindra Scorpio in India.

New Honda City 2014

New Honda City 2014

Honda City
Honda unveiled the fourth-generation City globally at an event in New Delhi on November 25, 2013. The revised car was launched on January 7, 2014. The 2014 Honda City sedan retains the overall design but has got changes to both the exterior as well as the interiors. It is also packed with a host of new features.
Exterior:Honda City
The revised sedan is not a completely new product and development has taken place in terms of a sporty and aggressive design. This is based on the carmaker’s ‘Exciting H Design’ philosophy which is expected to make its way to all the upcoming cars from Honda. The changes include the modifications to the front and rear profile of the vehicle. The revised front grille displays a singular broad horizontal slat laden with chrome. It tapers upwards at the edges and gets the Honda emblem in the centre. The grille extends down to the bumper which sees another thin horizontal slat before the air intakes. The double barrel headlamps are wider. The front bumper, which houses the circular fog lamps with honeycomb surrounds, gets redesigned air intakes. The bonnet has two vertical creases to channelize the air.
The side profile of the car also exhibits the creases meant to reduce the overall aerodynamic drag. Though the overall length of the vehicle is the same, the wheelbase is longer. The top end variant of the car stands tall on swept back design alloy wheels while the lower models get wheel caps with a similar shape. A slight change can be seen on the rear bumper but what is worth mentioning is the two-part layout of the tail lamps. The outer part of the tail light extends into the sides of the car, while the inner part is on the boot lid. The chrome strip running horizontally above the licence plate slot spreads across the rear linking the lamps. The car is tall from behind but the height is unrecognizable thanks to the horizontal lines added to the back.
Interiors:Honda City
The interiors of the new Honda City are very similar to the layout of the previous car. However, the plastic quality has improved. It now gets a beige and black colour scheme with leather upholstery on the top spec variants while the lower variants get a fabric trim. The steering wheel has been revised and is larger than the previous one. It gets more buttons on it for audio connectivity, phone controls and cruise control.
The instrument cluster has three circles with the one in centre for the speedometer, the left one for the tachometer and the one on the right side to display the other information like the trip metre, the fuel gauge and the instant fuel consumption. The speedo boasts of two colours for the backlight- blue and green. If you are driving efficiently, the blue light turns into green. For tuning the car to the best possible efficiency, the automatic car’s dashboard gets an ‘Eco’ button. A centre arm rest is also present.
Honda City
The centre console is inclined towards the driver for ease of access. It gets the five inch touchscreen LCD, touch screen climate control and charging points at the bottom. A push-button for engine on-off is seen close to the centre console. The other features list includes eight speakers, rear AC vents, keyless entry and a first-in-segment cruise control. The features available on the top spec variant are even more which comprise of the sun/moon-roof.
However, all the variants get the driver seat airbag, ABS and EBD. The number of airbags and other features increase with ascend in the variants. The infotainment system comes sans the touch screen system and the navigation option but it supports iPod and USB connectivity, has an aux-in port and can be paired to the phone through Bluetooth.
Since the wheelbase has been extended, the space inside the cabin has increased giving more legroom for the rear passengers. There is also a slight increase in the headroom. This City gets actual AC vents at the back that are not just blowers as seen on other cars. Two power outlets are placed beneath the rear AC vents. The boot space has increased by four litres than the previous model and now is 510 litres making it the largest boot in the class.
Engine:Honda City Engine
The new Honda City is being offered with two sets of engines and gearbox options. The diesel engine is the 1.5-litre i-DTEC unit from the Amaze sedan that churns out 98bhp and 200Nm of torque while the petrol is the retuned version of the 1.5-litre i-VTEC unit which produces 119bhp and 145Nm of torque. The diesel is mated to a six –speed manual while the petrol gets an option of a five-speed manual CVT gearbox.
Mileage:
Honda claims that the new City has the highest ARAI efficiency numbers in the segment. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine is India’s most efficient diesel engine delivering an ARAI tested mileage of 26 kmpl. The petrol 1.5-litre i-VTEC delivers fuel efficiency of 18kmpl with the CVT and 17.8kmpl with the five-speed manual.
Competitors:
The new Honda City will rival the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Ford Fiesta, Skoda Rapid, Nissan Scala and the next generation of the Maruti Suzuki SX4.
Honda CityColours:
The new car is available in six colours- Golden Brown Metallic, Carnelian Red Pearl, Urban Titanium Metallic, Tapetta White, Alabaster Silver Metallic and Crystal Black Pearl.
Variants:
The petrol version of the City comes in manual as well as automatic transmission. The manual petrol is available in five variants- E, S, SV, V and VX. The automatic transmission is only available in the SV and VX models. The diesel City is only available with a manual gearbox and comes in five versions- E, S, SV, V and VX.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Maruti Suzuki Celerio
The Celerio is a B-segment hatchback from Maruti Suzuki launched mainly to replace the A-Star. The Celerio plugs the gap between the Wagon R and the Ritz with a car that provides decent cabin and boot space. Launched at the 2014 Auto Expo, this hatchback armed with AMT transmission is one of the best options for urban commuting.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is 3.6-metres long (2.4 metre wheelbase), 1.6-metres wide and 1.5-metres high, making it much larger than the outgoing A-Star. Its silhouette has all the elements of the small Suzuki hatchback language, but the fascia and the design is completely new. The front design is part of Suzuki’s new design language with a curved two stat grille connecting the headlamps. The headlamp console and the front bumper are angular giving it a modern feel.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio left front three quarter
Both the shoulder-line and waist-line are bold, but they don’t add much value in this small car. The top-end variant gets a nice set of alloy-wheels. The rear is typical Maruti with the tail lamp cluster similar to that of the bigger siblings. There are multiple horizontal lines here that actually make the car look more compact from this angle.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio Dashboard
Inside, the top-spec Celerio gets beige and black upholstery, Bluetooth enabled music system and electric OVRMs. On the safety front optional features include ABS and dual front airbags. Two passengers can comfortably sit at the back for a long journey, the third passenger won’t have too many issues during sit rides. The Celerio provides ample leg room and knee room for the rear bench, but it is the width that is the main issue. The boot space of 235 litres is actually more than the space available in the Swift or most other hatchbacks in its segment, also the rear seat can be folded almost doubling the storage space. The Celerio is not a feature-rich car, however, the dealers will offer many company approved accessories.
The Celerio is available in four manual and two AMT variants with both gearboxes mated to a 1.0-litre K10B engine that produces 67bhp and 90Nm torque. The Japanese carmaker is also offering a VXi CNG variant with a manual transmission. The manual is a standard five-speed unit available with all Maruti products in that range. The AMT unit on the other hand is a segment first, offering the interface of an AT gearbox on a manual. The AMT is becoming a hit with the city dwellers delivering decent performance without much compromise on efficiency (ARAI efficiency: 23.1kmpl).
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio competes with the Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat, Nissan Micra Active and others in the entry-level B-segment

Fiat Linea

Fiat Linea

Fiat Linea
Fiat India launched the facelifted version of the Linea facelift in India in March 2014. It is now available in seven variants. The new Linea facelift gets a significant cosmetic updates both inside and outside but remains the same mechanically. It was first unveiled in Turkey in late 2012 and debuted in India at the 2014 Auto Expo in Delhi.

Exterior
The facelifted Fiat Linea gets a revised fascia and the most noticeable changes are to the new bumper which now has more bling with a dash of chrome and houses the updated fog lamps console. The conservative square pattern grille has been ditched in favour of a more contemporary slat design. It is the same case with the Fiat logo which is now smaller and has more of a tear drop shape as compared to the current car’s round shape.
On the sides, the facelifted Fiat Linea remains the same as the current car and this includes the flared wheel arches, metallic strip running along the base as well as the forward slanting stance. The car is offered in six colours: Tuscan Wine, New Pearl White, Mangnesio Grey, Hip Hop Black, Sunbeam Gold and Minimal Grey.
Fiat Linea left rear three quarter
At the rear, the facelifted Fiat Linea now gets a large chrome strip running along the width of the boot in a bid to give the car a more premium appeal. The number plate has now moved from the bumper to the bootlid and that gets a chrome strip as well. Thanks to the revision of the number plate, the logos and badging too have moved from just above the bumper to the top of the bootlid. A noticeable feature is the chrome strip under each of the brake light assemblies which by the look of it will further brighten the lamps when they are on.
Interior
Inside, the changes are more pronounced as the car gets a more premium two-tone dashboard and we expect that this will be offered across the range. The centre console has been redesigned and integrates a new audio system with Bluetooth support.
Fiat Linea Interior
Storage space has been improved with the addition of cubby holes and the A/C vents have been restyled. The instrument cluster gets chrome rings to give it a more upmarket feel. However, most of the layout is carried over from the current car and will be familiar to those who have seen the car in its various avatars over the years. Some of the new additions over the standard features are cruise control and reverse parking sensors. The top-spec variants also get 16-inch alloy wheels, leather trim for seats, gear knob and steering, cruise control and climate control.
Engines
Under the hood, the facelifted Fiat Linea is now being offered with two petrol and one diesel engine options - the 1.4-litre naturally aspirated, 1.4-litre turbocharged T-Jet petrol and the 1.3-litre Multijet petrol. Only the base Active variant gets the naturally aspirated engine with an output of 89bhp and 115Nm of torque, the turbocharged petrol version produces 112bhp and 207Nm of torque while the oil-burner has an output of 93bhp and 209Nm of torque. All the engines are mated to a five-speed manual unit.
Fiat Linea Engine Bay
Competition
The Fiat Linea competes in the C-Segment with the Nissan Sunny, Tata Manza, Skoda Rapid, Renault Scala, VW Vento, Hyundai Verna, Ford Fiesta and the Honda City.

Datsun GO

The Datsun GO is the new budget hatchback from the Nissan stable. The brand was revived after a period of 30 years and will be used to sell budget cars in various developing markets. Each of these markets will get a model suited to their specific needs and for the hatchback-crazy Indian market Datsun has brought GO and will eventually also launch the GO+ MPV.
Exterior
The Datsun GO hatchback in the front gets a hexagonal grille with chrome inserts and headlights that flow from the front of the hood to the middle. The grille and bumper in combination with the lines of the hood work to give the car a muscular appearance despite its small size. The side profile is reminiscent of the Nissan Micra as the GO is based on the former. A speciality is that Datsun has fitted the windows with black cladding and this matches the black colour OVRMs.
At the back the GO gets a vertically stacked light design, openable boot lid but looks clean due to minimal badging. Datsun has also fitted the black cladding at the back in a bid to keep the appearance even throughout the vehicle. In terms of measurements, the GO is 3.7 meters long (2.4 meters wheelbase), 1.6 meters wide and 1.4 meters high.

The mid-level A variant adds an air conditioner with filter, chrome front grille, body coloured bumpers and Jacquard seat upholstery to the equation. Toyota Corolla Altis

Toyota Corolla Altis

Toyota New Corolla
Toyota will keep on display its all-new European spec Corolla at the upcoming 2014 Auto Expo, in Delhi, next month. It had revealed the European spec car globally in June of last year and it is derived from the same Furia design language as the American spec car. The car has already been spotted testing in India near the Japanese automaker’s plant outside Bengaluru.

Exterior
The 2014 Corolla as we had said earlier has been derived the from the Furia design philosophy. While it is a complete departure from the current vehicle in terms of aggressive appearance, it is however, more conservative than its American counterpart.
It gets a square design in front with sharp lines for the bumper, grille and the hood. The blacked-out headlamps and light cluster (now featuring an LED insert) flow upwards into the sloping bonnet which has prominent creases on the sides.
All four wheels have extremely flared arches and the doors slope forward on the side. At the back, Toyota has retained some of the aggressiveness from the American-spec car due to the wrap-around tail lamps. The rest of the rear looks like it has been designed based on the current Camry sedan and features a large number of bulging lines.
Toyota New Corolla Front view
Interior
The Toyota Corolla has a relatively conservative design philosophy for the both the American and European spec car. Design bits are expected to be in beige with standard fabric for the seats. However, the top-spec variant is expected to get fake wood inserts as well beige leather upholstery trim for the seats. Standard features across variants are expected to include driver and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, rear AC vents, parking sensors and electronically internally adjustable OVRMs. On the higher specs, we can also expect front parking sensors, Xenon lamps, touch screen infotainment system as well as electronically adjustable seats.
Toyota New Corolla Right Front Three Quater
Engine
The engine line-up will be the same as before- a 1.8-litre petrol unit and a 1.4-litre diesel engine. The former produces 138bhp and 173Nm of torque while the latter produces 87bhp and 205Nm of torque. The diesel has a six-speed manual while the petrol can also be had with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Competition and price
The Toyota Corolla competes with Skoda Octavia, Chevrolet Cruze, VW Jetta and the Hyundai Elantra. We expect that this new car will be priced in the Rs 12 lakh to Rs 17 lakh for the top-spec diesel variant. The Japanese automaker may also introduce an AT box for the diesel variants with this new model. It is likely to be launched in June of this year.

Ford Fiesta

Ford Fiesta

Ford Fiesta Review

The Ford Fiesta has been the American automaker’s C-Segment fighter for quite some time now. What we now call the Ford Classic was the original Fiesta that came to India in 2004 and was a major success for the American automaker during its entire run. It introduced the completely new car in 2009 for the Indian market with much anticipation. However, despite having a well-built package, the car did not do well due to an error in the pricing policy. Ford displayed the facelifted car at the 2014 Auto Expo and is expected to launch it later this month.
Exterior
The 2014 Ford Fiesta gets a similar fascia to that of the Ford EcoSport which in turn, is in line with the American automaker’s family face and One Ford global programme. Its most striking feature is the Kinetic design derived Aston Martin-Esque grille which is now a standard feature across all its models. The revisions to the fascia now includes sharper headlights that flow to the back of the hood, changed housing for the fog lamps and obviously a new bumper.
The side profile of the 2014 Ford Fiesta remains the same as before but now includes two revised designs for the wheels and consequently the wheel covers. It still retains its characteristic flared wheels arches, forward leaning stance as well as aerodynamic creases running along the side.
The rear profile now gets some minor modifications in the form of a revised number plate holder, a rear bumper which has now been fitted with a chrome strip to give a premium appeal and finally a modified tail lamp cluster.
Interior
The facelifted Fiesta remains the same as the outgoing model in terms of the interiors so this means fabric seats, leather- wrapped steering wheel reverse parking sensors, climate control (the last three being applicable for Trend and Titanium), airbags and ABS with EBD. However, what’s new on this model are the rain sensing wipers, push button start, ambient lighting and Ford’s patented SYNC technology which made its Indian debut with the EcoSport compact crossover.
Engines and gearbox and variants
The Ford Fiesta facelift will only be offered with a single diesel engine and this mill is a 1.5-litre unit that produces 89bhp and 204Nm of torque and has been mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Ford will only launch the Fiesta facelift with a diesel engine and so we expect that they will introduce a base Ambiente diesel variant along with Style and Titanium+ variants.
Price and competition
We expect that Ford will price the facelifted Fiesta in the range of Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh but may price it even lower if it is only going to produce diesel models for the domestic market. It competes with the Honda City, Renault Scala, Nissan Sunny, VW Vento and the Skoda Rapid in the C-Segment sedan category. In terms of price it also competes with the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Class

Mercedes-Benz CLA Class

The CLA 45 AMG is Mercedes-Benz India’s most affordable AMG model. Now available for sale, the high performance compact sedan heralds a new era of performance motoring in India with its striking new design, the award winning four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and an advanced all-wheel drive system.
Exterior
The CLA 45 AMG is not the kind of model we are used to from the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. It gets all the necessary visual elements to make it a performance car, but it is more of an elegantly designed vehicle with sleek proportions; something that is not very AMG-esque.
The front-end look is similar to that of the A-Class however this being an AMG, there’s aggression everywhere. The massive air intakes, the sporty looking bumper and the gaping grille all add up to make the front of the CLA 45 AMG very imposing on the road. At the sides is the car’s highlighting design trait i.e. the sloping roofline which is very appealing. The CLA 45 AMG also features light-alloy twin-spoke alloys wheels with titanium grey finish. The rear-end is as aggressive looking as the front, thanks to the sporty bumper design and the typical AMG quad exhaust pipes.
Interior
The cabin layout is like any modern Mercedes based on the company’s MFA platform, with rotary air vents and a tablet-sized LCD display. The sporty instrument cluster features round black dials and a carbon-fibre design. The AMG detailing is everywhere as is evident from the Recaro bucket seats, toggle switch-like AMG gear lever, AMG performance steering wheel and panoramic sliding sunroof. The sportiness is further accentuated by the AMG floor mats and illuminated door sill panels with “AMG” lettering. The red coloured seats belts complete the sportiness of the interiors.
Engine and Gearbox
The CLA 45 AMG houses a 2-litre, four cylinder petrol engine which proudly holds the title of being the most powerful four-cylinder series-production engine in the world. Producing 345bhp of power and 450Nm of torque, the four-pot unit is the smallest engine AMG has ever designed. The engine is paired with AMG’s SpeedShift 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
Mercedes says the CLA 45 AMG can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 4.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 250kmph. The 7-speed gearbox is flange-mounted on the transversely installed four-cylinder engine and features three shifting modes, a double-declutching function and launch control. According to the brand, key software modules have been adopted from the SLS AMG GT and SLS AMG Coupe Black Series for optimum shifts.
Competition
Now on sale in the Indian market, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG competes with the Audi S4 which is also a performance-focussed sporty sedan. While the CLA 45 AMG is slightly more powerful, the supercharged V6 engine-equipped S4 has a more spacious rear seat. The CLA, however, is better suited for urban roads thanks to its smaller proportions.
